Lock Poker Review

Established in 2007, Lock Poker is an online poker room that has always been attached to a U.S.-friendly poker network. Lock Poker provides excellent downloadable software. The look is sleek and modern, the interface is efficient and user friendly, and it supports both Windows and Mac computers. Lock Poker delivers 24/7 customer support, and they provide a robust promotional structure, which includes a lucrative VIP program that maximizes the bankroll for its loyal clients. We also work closely with the site to offer a great $750 Lock Poker bonus. You can read more information about the bonus details below.

Claim your $750 Lock Poker bonus now!

For its first five-plus years, Lock Poker has been a member of the very popular and active Merge Gaming Network. In 2012, Lock Poker acquired Cake Poker Network assets, which allowed it to launch Revolution Gaming. By June 1, 2012, Lock Poker had completely transitioned to the new network. This move shifted the balance of power in the industry and made Lock Poker an even bigger player in it, but from the perspective of the loyal Lock Poker player, the transition was seamless.

Lock Poker Bonus Code and Promotions

Lock Poker’s lucrative welcome bonus (Lock Poker bonus code LOCK150) matches a new client’s first deposit by 150 percent up to an impressive $750. In order to maximize the Lock Poker bonus (code LOCK150), you must deposit $500.

To take advantage of this offer, create an account and then redeem the Lock Poker bonus code (LOCK150). Note that it is important that you redeem the code prior to making the deposit. Lock Poker will award the bonus money in $5 increments, and each bonus dollar has a wagering requirement of 75 VIP points.

VIP points are the currency of the Lock Poker loyalty program. VIP status has four tiers: White, Silver, Black and Black Elite. Level is dictated by monthly VIP point accrual. A player requires 1,000 VIP points per calendar month to maintain White status, and they require 50,000 for Black Elite. Note that points applied to wagering requirements and status are not actually used up. They apply to both, and the player can still use them to redeem for cash and other perks.

Lock Poker hosts nine $50 freerolls every day of the week. In addition, all first-time depositors earn a seat at an exclusive new depositor freeroll tournament. Lock Poker provides this gift in addition to the match bonus on the deposit.

Lock Poker Download and Games

Poker is a game of many variations. One of the most refreshing aspects of Lock Poker is that it not only caters to options other than Texas Holdem, it actually has the player traffic to support them.

• Texas Holdem — The most popular poker variant in the world is available at Lock Poker in numerous ring and tournament formats. Players can also design custom tables.
• Omaha Poker — Omaha is the second most popular poker variant. Lock Poker offers straight Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo, and both styles are available in ring and tournament formats.
• 7 Card Stud — Lock offers 7 card stud and variants like Hi/Lo and Razz. All games are available using standard stakes, micro stakes, and “funny” money, and Lock sometimes has tournaments.
• Draw Poker — Draw games include 5 Card Draw, Badugi and Triple Draw. Draw tournaments are rare, but Lock Poker provides a wide range of table options, and the tables are always active.

They offer busy cash games at Lock Poker along with plenty of sit and go action and a full slate of multi-table tournaments. In fact, they promise to add even more tournaments as the new Revolution Gaming network matures.

Lock Poker Community and Support

Lock Poker provides around-the-clock customer support throughout the year. The primary modes of support are live chat and email, both of which should be available 24/7. Live chat does go offline however at times, especially during off-hours, but email is always available, and the offline live chat system seamlessly transfers the client to it. The Lock Poker support reps are professional and knowledgeable, and Lock Poker has specific support specialists for banking and technical matters.

Launched in 2006, PKR Poker contains 2.4 million active users. Its widespread popularity is due in large part to its use of virtual avatars in the vein of a game like “Second Life,” allowing you to send your virtual doppelganger around to various tables, slot machines and games throughout the online casino.

Despite being based on real money betting transactions, PKR Poker is geared toward the casual gamer who may be equally interested in tricking out his or her avatar as in playing games and winning money. However, because of the large number of casual gamers attracted to PKR, it may be a good place for poker grinders interested in playing for money.

Sign up at PKR now and claim your cash!

The unique 3D avatars offered in PKR Poker are among its most interesting features. This visual experience has allowed for spin-off media entertainment opportunities, including “PKRTV,” a show featuring televised poker tournaments shown on the UK Sky Television poker channel. It seeks to add more guaranteed tournaments, high-stakes cash tables and other elements to lure in professional, seasoned gamers. It has been growing by leaps and bounds since its inception just six years ago. PKR Poker currently caters to a UK/Europe market, though it is open to gamers around the world (no US players at this time).

With easy-to-understand set of promos and rewards programs, a classy interface and a wide variety of games in addition to poker, PKR Poker offers a little something for everyone. The game involves a free PKR download program, which you can customize with the help of PKR’s excellent customer service representatives.

Use our PKR Poker bonus code POKERVIP to receive $800 free, matching your deposit 100%!

PKR Bonus and Promotions

Flushdraw.com offers a significant initial deposit PKR Poker bonus, with 100% of your bonus matched up to $800. Just use the PKR Poker bonus code POKERVIP to start out. PKR players also receive up to 1,500 PKR Points, 6 tickets to premium freerolls, and other items to show appreciation for their business.

Additionally, PKR Poker has a great promotional system. The Club PKR system allows you access to more features, including improved items for your avatar, better tables, and improved reload bonuses designed to keep you playing. With six levels of club membership from Member to Diamond, there are plenty of things for you to work toward. The best part of this system, however, is the fact that there are no monthly playing requirements. You just need to earn a certain number of points, and you can have that membership level for life. In addition to access to exclusive tournaments, betting rooms and bonuses, high membership levels give you a free subscription to PKR Poker bonus magazines and other exclusive web content.

As a side-note, PKR has a great player store. This lets you exchange your PKR points for merchandise, some of which is actually a pretty good deal compared to the dollars you can receive for your points. Browse through the store and check it out!

PKR Poker Games

In addition to 3D Poker, PKR Poker offers a number of “mini-games” or additional gambling opportunities. Games available with PKR Poker include:

If you tend to watch poker on television, there is a very good chance you are already familiar with WPT. The World Poker Tour is one of the most popular poker series on television and now they bring their poker clout and expertise to the online gaming world.

There are a number of reasons to like WPT Poker, aside from the gorgeous WPT Poker Royal Flush Girls. For starters, they offer a 100% first deposit bonus worth up to $100 – use WPT Poker bonus code POKERVIP. There are also tons more monthly promotions including a lot of freeroll tournaments, money added and guaranteed tournaments, leaderboards, and many other generous promos. It is also noteworthy that WPT Poker is part of the Party Network. They share a player base with Party, giving them a top 5 ranking in terms of player volume. This makes finding games much easier and more players generally equals more fish and more money on the tables, so to speak.

Join WPT Poker now!

WPT Poker Bonus and Promotions

It is true that the WPT Poker bonus is not the most generous you will find online. However, for most players, $100 is a reasonable deposit amount and the bonus will then be fairly easy to clear. Some sites offer thousands in bonus money but make it all but impossible to actually see any of that money. The WPT Poker bonus can be easily earned by most players. You can use WPT Poker bonus code POKERVIP to claim the free cash, simply follow our links and your WPT bonus will automatically be credited when you make a first deposit using our WPT bonus code.

When you claim your bonus, the cash will be placed in a separate bonus account. In order to be able to play with or withdraw your bonus you need to clear the bonus by playing in real money games. As you play, you will earn WPT Points, which will be used to clear the bonus. The bonus is split into 10 equal portions, so for $100 in bonus money, you will receive your cash in $10 increments. You need to earn 6 times the bonus amount in WPT Points to claim each portion. So, when you earn 60 WPT Points, you will receive $10. This will of course happen 10 more times until you clear the whole bonus or it expires (after 60 days).

WPT Poker Game Selection

As part of the Party Network, WPT does not have the traffic issues that plague many other sites. At just about any time of day there are thousands of players logged on, making game selection a breeze. The most popular games are Hold’em and Omaha but they also offer hi/low formats along with Stud games.

Additionally, WPT Poker offers the unique Double Hold’em variant. It plays much like regular Hold’em, except players are dealt 3 hole cards instead of 2. One card is declared the “point” card and must be used. Then you may use either one of the two remaining hole cards to make a hand. This makes for some big hands and a lot of action. It is a very fun game to play, give it a try. It is only available at a few poker sites online including Party Poker and WPT.

WPT Poker Loyalty Program

The loyalty program at WPT Poker is similar to that of its counterpart, Party Poker. There are 5 Key Levels of the scheme, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Palladium and Palladium Elite. Players at all levels can earn cash back plus bonuses, making it great for casual players who want to cash in on occasion. However, higher level grinders can earn a nice return as well, up to 50%! That’s hard to beat at any site.

WPT Points are earned at the rate of 2 per $1 in rake paid. They use the weighted contributed rake calculation, which simply means the more you play the more you will pay in rake and therefore get credit in WPT Points. Those who are very tight and do not put a lot of money in pots will earn fewer points over a given period.

WPT Poker Software and Security

WPT Poker uses a solid software package and everything you need comes securely via the WPT Poker download. The software loads quickly and once launched you can expect a reliable connection to the Party Network. The layout is uncluttered and games can be found and joined easily. The tables are pretty simple, nothing spectacular to be honest, but they provide the majority of options that you would expect from a major poker site. WPT Poker is not the best choice for those who like to play a large number of tables, but for casual players or if you generally play on from 1 to 4 tables, WPT Poker is an excellent choice.

They treat site security very seriously and there have been no recent reports of security issues at WPT Poker or on the Party Network. They are part of a publicly owned company so in that respect they are even more careful than some of the other large poker sites, which may be privately owned.

WPT Poker Banking

There are many different options for making a deposit or withdrawal at WPT Poker. In most cases, players can request a payout via the same method which they used to deposit. This makes the transactions very fast and secure with minimal wait time. Neteller, Skrill (Moneybookers), and Click2Pay are some of the most popular methods. Other deposit methods include debit and credit cards, Webmoney (for Russian players), Paysafecard and Giropay (best for Austrian and German players) as well as other local options. Additional withdrawal methods include bank transfer or bank wire and cheque.

WPT Poker Customer Support

A first class poker site should have first class support, and that’s exactly what WPT Poker offers. They are available 24 hours a day via email or telephone. They even have specialists available for assistance with making deposits or withdrawals.

Overall, WPT Poker is a great room, more so for recreational player than high volume players. Although, there is a place for them at WPT Poker as well. In fact, the high proportions of “just for fun” type players make the games at WPT very loose and can easily make playing fewer tables worth it just to get in on the action.

Claim your $100 at WPT Poker now!

Black Chip Poker review

Black Chip Poker is one of the leading online poker rooms on the massively successful and well known Merge Network. It’s classy, it’s slick and it’s got a huge variety of poker formats and stakes on offer. It’s got easily customizable software, excellent customer service, and an easy to understand loyalty/reward program, which I’ll explain about a bit later.

Significantly, it’s a USA friendly poker site which gives players from the States a chance to play on a great site that is part of a very trustworthy and reliable company. It’s been around since 2008 and since opening its doors again to American online poker traffic has seen a tremendous surge of new players signing up.

It’s ideal for players of all levels, due to the high volume of player traffic the network boasts, the variety of poker on offer, and the unlimited scope for multi-tabling, keeping even the hardest of hardcore grinders happy.

Don’t just take my word for it though – Black Chip has some great professional players on its team including one of the best SNG players in the entire world, Ben ‘Reasons14’ Reason, and Greg ‘Xorc1st’ Shevach.

What you’ll find though is that there are not loads of professionals or ‘sharks’ on Black Chip, so there’s more than enough fish to be fed upon!

Join Black Chip Poker today!

Black Chip Poker Bonuses and Promotions

At the moment Black Chip offers a very competitive $750 first time deposit poker bonus, which will match your own funds by 150%. Just use Black Chip Poker bonus code BCP175 when you make your first deposit. The Black Chip bonus is attained simply by playing poker – which in doing so means you will earn Player Points. 75 Points earns you $1 of the bonus, and it’s paid out in increments of $5.

Should you make further deposits later on, you can also get yourself a nice ‘reload bonus’ of 75% up to $375.

With both the first time and reload deposit bonuses, you have up to 90 days from making the deposit to rake through the Points to earn it.

New depositing players also receive entry into a daily $500 freeroll; the tournament token is good for 14 days, and with very poor competition it’s relatively easy to cash in.

The other notable promotion is an ongoing one, and it’s the Merge network’s ‘Bad Beat Jackpot’. This is as it sounds – it’s a massive prize-pool which pays out when a player on a bad beat jackpot cash table suffers from a really horrible bad beat – and I do mean a horrible beat, as you need LOSE holding at least quad sevens (using both hold cards). The BBJ has been known to hit hundreds of thousands of dollars before now so has the potential to be a life-changing payout to the people involved in the pot (the winner of the hand also gets a share as well as the loser, and some of the pool is held back to ‘seed’ the next BBJ).

Finally there is the ‘Royal Flush Bonus’ which again does what it says – if you make a Royal during any cash game at Black Chip Poker you can snag yourself a very nice bonus of 100 x the big blind, to a maximum $500. (Bear in mind with this bonus it’s not automatic and you need to email support with details of the hand to claim it).

Black Chip Poker Software

The Black Chip poker download is based on the excellent Merge network software. It’s smooth, it’s slick and it just looks great. But as well as looking the part, it really plays well too, with some of the best animation and graphics you can find in a poker room.

The best feature though is the excellent ‘custom colors’ option, where you can choose themes for the table, as well as choose colors for pretty much any aspect of it, e.g. the rail, carpet, interface and so on. This means if for some reason you don’t like the default ‘look and feel’ of the Black Chip Poker tables, you can simply amend things to be more to your liking within just a few clicks of the mouse.

Black Chip Poker Reward Program

Black Chip’s player loyalty scheme is called the VIP Program. It’s simple to understand and it has the potential to be very lucrative for its players. Basically what happens is you earn ‘VIP Points’ for cash, MTT and SNG action that you bring to Black Chip. The more VIP Points you earn, the higher your status in the scheme becomes, from ‘2 High’ right up to ‘A High’. Each levels of the scheme has better rewards including proportionately better points-to-cash ‘exchange rates’ and higher prize-pool freerolls.

As well as cash prizes, you can also opt to ‘spend’ your points in the Black Chip loyalty store, or change them for entry into the weekly, and daily guaranteed tournaments.

The image below shows the Points required and some of the benefits of each level of the VIP program:

Become a Black Chip Poker VIP today!

Black Chip Poker Game Selection

As I mentioned at the start of this review, an area where Black Chip really excel is the choice they give to their poker players, both in terms of stakes and formats. Now there’s the ‘usual’ games you’d expect to see on any site, such as Texas Hold’em and the increasingly popular Omaha, but there’s also less common formats such as 7 Card Stud, Razz, 5 Card, 5 Card Draw, Triple Draw, Mixed games and even Badugi. If you want it, they’ve got it!

Black Chip is a great site for the micro, low and medium stakes cash game player with stakes going from $0.02/$0.04 to $50/$100 – catering for everyone but the true high stakes professional poker player. The action is certainly centered around the lower stakes with absolutely superb player traffic even at traditionally quiet times of the day.

For you SNG players there is a greater array of stakes from the highest of $2240 down to the micro $0.11, so definitely something for everyone in that regard.

This is the fifth article in the Flushdraw.com HU SNG strategy series.

Although learning how to effectively play a button is very important, you should also know when to pick good spots to three bet and also to four bet before the flop. These spots will come up often and these plays should be in every successful heads up sit and go player’s bag of tricks. This first thing you should look to do when playing a heads up match is test your opponent. The first way to do this is by making a raise from the button. The second way is by putting in a three bet from the big blind.

Three Betting in HU SNG

If you choose to three bet from the big blind, you shouldn’t do it every hand. This is something you should do to get value for big hands or to re-steal pots with hands that can flop hard. If you are going to re-steal pots, one reason to do this is when you see an opponent who is folding a lot either before the flop or on the flop. If they are folding a great portion of the time you can get away with three betting lighter in spots. Basically, you should look at hands like K7 suited, J10 suited, Ace rag suited. The re-steal is hard to pull off against a calling station, so, you should look to find players who are capable of folding to use it.

Also, spots to three bet for value will occur. If you have a pocket pair above fives you want to three bet. If you have hands like AK or AQ, you also want to three bet. These are hands that you will be three betting for value, in hopes that your opponent shoves over the top, and you are either in a dominating position or you are flipping coin. The amount you are going to three bet depends on what stage of the match you are at and also how big your hand is. If you have a hand like pocket aces, you absolutely want to play a pot post flop, so, you should three bet a smaller amount. For instance, if the blinds are 15/30, and the opening raise from the button is to 75, you should three bet between: 150-200. The reason is because you want a call and you would like to induce a shove. If you have a hand like pocket sixes, you might want to make a bigger three bet to 225-250 or so in the same scenario to put your opponent to more of a decision. The idea is that if you have a big pocket pair, you want them to call and see a flop. You don’t want to give them the option to fold, so you three bet less. If you have a small to medium sized pocket pair, you want them to fold or put them to the test. If they four bet all-in you should have the ability to see that you may be beat and you can fold.

PokerStars can have aggressive HU SNG action with lots of 3 and 4 betting. Join PokerStars today – PokerStars download.

Four betting in HU SNG

Four betting is something that occurs about once or twice per match you play. The four bet hand will often times determine the winner of the match and the loser of the match. If you decide to four bet this means that you have put in a raise from the button, the big blind has three bet you, and you have now four bet them. This play is tricky because if you are playing against an aggressive bad opponent, it can work when you are doing it with complete air. The aggressive bad opponent will just assume to fold because often times the three bet is the only play in their arsenal. The aggressive bad or the frequent three bettor type of player is the only type of player you should four bet with nothing against. If you find a passive player three betting or four betting you should muck or shove if you have a big hand. A four bet is often times a shove in heads up sit and go play, unless it is the first or second blind level. The reason is because not too many players are willing to four bet and then fold certain hands like AQ or a pair of nines. It is often best to four bet shove and look to get into a race situation.

Once you have figured out how to play the flop in heads up sit and goes you should look to master button play. Playing the button in heads up sit and goes will make the difference between a winner and a loser. In most scenarios it is correct to put in a raise before the flop, but other times it could really hurt you. It depends on your pre-flop hand selection.

HU SNG Pre-flop hand selection

Depending on what hands you choose to play will determine how big the pots you play are and it will determine the amount of pots you win. If you are sitting on the button, especially early on in a match, your hand range should be anything suited or connected. Hands you should avoid are not suited hands like Q5 and worse, and j6 and below. The reason is because these hands are trouble hands. If you flop top pair or middle pair you are going to call bets, but you have no clue if you are ahead or not. If you cut down your range of hands to open pots with, you will put yourself in better spots throughout the match, and have more opportunities to win it. Also, it will be easier to play the flop turn and the river.

Visit Party Poker for soft HU SNGs – Party Poker download

HU SNG Flop, Turn, and River play

If you have entered a pot before the flop from the big blind, almost every time it will be checked to you. Unless you make a hand like quads or any unbeatable hand, you can make a bet and steal the pot. What a lot of good players do is win pots with nothing and get value when they do happen to have big hands. The best way to do this is by checking hands that have some showdown value on dry boards. What that means is that if a board comes out K83 rainbow and you have a hand like AK, you can check the flop. The reason to check is because you ideally want two streets of value in any hand of poker. Even if your opponent has an eight in their hand, you will probably get paid off by them. Or if they have a hand like QJ and a jack hits the turn, you will get paid off. It looks more so like a bluff when you don’t bet the flop, especially if you make pot sized bets at the pot. It will appear to be a steal play, but really it is a valuable play that you can use, and it will work out in your favor more times than not.

The only time you should make a bet out at a dry board with a big hand is against an overly aggressive check raising type player. If they like to check raise then you should let them hang themselves. Also be sure to mix up your play. Against weak opponents it will not really matter, but against good opponents they will quickly see your strategy and adjust accordingly.

Another valuable button play is to bet twice. This means that if you bet the flop you should also bet the turn. You should do this early on in heads up matches to feel out if your opponent is floating flops against you, and you should also do it to see what hands they call you with. If they do happen to call you twice when you were bluffing early on in a match they will think you are bluffing every time after that as well. When you do have a hand later on, you will win a bigger pot against them than the one you lost. This play also can turn your opponent into a tight passive player. That is something that you definitely want because if you run them over with bets early on, they will give up on playing pots with you. They will become very see through with their plays and you can get on the fast track to an easy win just by firing that second shell.

This is the third article in the Flushdraw.com HU SNG strategy series.

After you know what the correct raise sizes are before the flop you can now look into the correct amounts to continuation bet on the flop. The correct amounts in almost all circumstances range from a little under half the size of the pot to a full size of the pot bet. If you are betting too little or shoving, then you are continuation betting the wrong amounts. You want to bet enough where your opponent can fold when you are weak, and also bet enough where they can call when you are strong. At the first and second blind levels, you will find out the correct amounts to bet.

Check out Party Poker for weaker competition in Heads Up SnG’s!

HU SnG – First and Second Blind Levels:

At the first and second blind level you should feel out how your opponent plays. This means that you should continuation bet half the pot sometimes and the full size of the pot other times. A standard continuation bet for heads up sit and goes will be between half to three quarters of the pot. If you see that your opponent is reacting differently to the sizes of your bets, you should go with whatever is working.

In most cases you will either see your opponent check calling flops or you will see them checking and then folding. A number of players make it obvious once they have check called a flop that they have flopped middle or top pair. To avoid playing a big pot you can give up and will most likely see them bet the river into you after checking the turn.

However, if they are indeed weak (indicated by constantly checking pots down or folding to bets), you can fire a turn bullet and win the pot a good portion of the time. Only if you face an aggressive player will you see a bunch of check raises on the flop. If you see a lot of check raising going on, you should slow down, and stop continuation betting unless you are prepared to play a pot for your whole stack. At the first and second blind levels you should gather enough useful information to make your decisions on how much to bet and went to bet easier as the blind levels increase.

HU SnG – Third and Fourth Blind Levels:

At the third and fourth blind level you will know if your opponent is going to call continuation bets or fold to them. If you don’t know then you haven’t been paying enough attention to the type of player that they are. If your opponent is calling bets on the flop throughout the match, you can assume that they will be calling at this stage as well. If they are folding or raising throughout they will do the same things at this stage. If they are folding a lot post flop and calling a lot pre-flop, you can assume this player’s hand range is very wide. To exploit it all you have to do is bet. If you are getting check raised a lot, you can assume this player is very aggressive and you should look to play big pots with made hands against them. If your opponent calls every bet, you should look to continuation bet larger amounts with big hands because if they have been calling every bet then they will continue to call every bet. You can get a lot of value from bets on the flop against a player who calls a lot.

HU SnG – Final two levels:

At the 50/100 and 75/150 level there should be almost no continuation bets unless you raised to 200 at the 50/100 level, before the flop, with a big pocket pair and got called, then checked to. If that is the case then it will depend on the texture of the board if you should continuation bet or not. Betting 200 on the flop would make the most sense, but with the blinds big enough you could shove in with an over pair and get called by middle or top pair a large portion of the time. The reason is because your opponent can put you on a hand like AK or AQ. If the board comes out ten high and your opponent has a ten in their hand they are never folding to one bet, so, shoving can get a ton of value with an over pair in your hand.

After you have figured out the type of players you will play against, you should look at the proper sizes of what to raise before the flop. There are some players that most would consider to be aggressive bad players who incorrectly raise too much or too little. The correct amount depends on what the size of the blinds is. At the first and second level of blinds it is important to set a pace for the match and feel your opponent out.

PokerStars has more HU SNGs than any other site! Join PokerStars today!

HU SNG – First and Second Levels:

When you start a match, the most important thing to do is to set a tone for the match, and set a standard as of what to raise before the flop. If the blinds are 5/10 or 10/20 and you have 1,500 in chips, you should be raising to 30 or to 60 from the button. The reason to raise three times the blind is because it applies enough pressure on your opponent, so they think you could have a big hand, and it can force a fold when you play post flop pots with them. Also, you are deep stacked at this point compared to the chips in play, so three times the blind is correct. Once you move to the third blind level things will change slightly.

HU SNG – Third blind level:

On some sites this is the first blind level and others it is the second or third, so, it depends where you are playing, but to start off at the 15/30 level you should open to between a minimum raise to a three times the blind raise. In most cases, a 2.5 times the blind raise is best, so a raise to 75. The reason is because both players will have roughly 50 big blinds and 1,500 chips at this point, and if you start to alter your raises too much, like opening to 4 or 5 times the blind, you are over exuding yourself, and not getting correct value from hands. Also, if you keep with a standard raise and do it consistently, you will disguise what your hands are. It can and will hurt your chances as you enter the next stage of the match if you play erratic and change your pre-flop raise sizes too much. Once you reach the next level which is 25/50 you will have basically one of two choices.

HU SNG – Fourth blind level:

The first choice that you will have is to fold before the flop, and the second choice you have is to put in a minimum raise to 100. This is standard in every heads up sit and go format and you shouldn’t alter it at all. If you start to limp into pots, you are not forcing a fold ever, and you are giving your opponent the opportunity to take to pot away from you. Often times, when a player limps at the 25/50 level, you can raise from the big blind and steal the pot from them. Also, once you reach the 25/50 level something to keep in mind is that from this point on you will only be minimum raising before the flop or folding from the button. If you are playing from the big blind it depends on what your opponent does. If your opponent limps in, then you can raise to steal the pot around 2.5 times the blind, or if you want action a minimum raise is fine. Accurately assessing your opponent at this level will determine what you can get away with and how your raises should fluctuate. After the 25/50 level you will jump to the 50/100 level and if the match last longer the 75/150 level.

HU SNG – Final two levels:

In almost every great match or with of the better opponents you run into, you will reach the 50/100 and 75/150 level. At this point in the match, you are shoving a wide range of hands from the button; pretty much anything reasonable and you are min raising mostly with big pocket pairs. The reason to minimum raise still even with only 10-15 big blinds left at the 50/100 level is because it still gives your opponent the opportunity to shove with a worse hand. If you slam your stack all-in with aces, you might get a fold from a hand like K9. Instead of doing that, if you min raise, you could get a shove from a hand like that. You are more or less leaving the door open when you have big pocket pairs. At the 75/150 level you should shove almost any two cards from the button because at this point you have 10 big blinds, maybe a little more or a little less. The pots at this stage are all very important, so, you should look to win all of them by shoving.

If you want your poker playing experience to be consistently profitable, you should not only focus on taking down the monster pots, but dedicate some of your attention to picking up regular small pots. One of the ways this can be achieved is by using the continuation bet to your advantage.

A continuation bet is simply a bet made post-flop, irrespective of whether the flop has improved your hand. Players witnessing your continuation bet will calculate that if you raised (say) 3x the big blind pre-flop, and are making the same sized bet again, it will cost them a further three big blinds to call your bet in this round of betting, three more after the turn and a further three following the river – effectively, it is going to cost them nine big blinds to see your hand.

The continuation bet works best when you have been the last person to raise in the previous round of betting, and consequently going to be the last person to act in the next round. Furthermore, there should be no raises in front of you in the latter round of betting – for example, you are on the button and raise pre-flop. The big blind calls, and after the flop checks to you. You then bet again to the same value as your original bet. If the big blind was just defending his blinds, and has not connected with the flop, he will fold and you collect the pot.

The purpose of the continuation bet is to put your opponent under pressure. By demonstrating hand strength in your pre-flop betting, and then re-enforcing that with your post-flop action, your opponent must consider carefully whether he wants to continue playing against an aggressive opponent or fold his hand and wait for a better opportunity. Should the big blind call, he might still be defending his blinds but you have to be aware that he may well have acknowledged your continuation bet and is slow-playing you to the river. Only your previous observation of your opponents will determine whether you should continue with the continuation bets – as well as the value of your cards of course!

For the continuation bet to be successful, the right conditions have to be in place, and you have to use this betting strategy fairly frequently to establish a reputation for its use. Bearing this in mind, look out for other players using the continuation bet, because there is an element of semi-bluff about it and you could benefit from slow-playing a continuation bettor to the river.

The continuation bet is frequently used at online poker tables and has gained a reputation for providing those small pots which make a difference to your long term poker profitability. It is also a great way of building a pot when you do make a big hand. It is particularly lucrative in heads up situations or against a maximum of two other players, but because of the time it for other players to acknowledge your use of this strategy, do not abandon the continuation bet as an option should you start to use it and it does not benefit you immediately.
